INQUA 2002my: INtegrated QUAternary MArine REcords at Sensitive Latitudes (INQUA-MARE)

The “INQUA MARE: INtegrated QUAternary MArine REcord at Sensitive Latitudes” project brought together researchers studying Holocene sediment records from Arctica and Antarctica, two regions linked by thermohaline circulation and atmospheric teleconnection throughout the Tropics.

Abstract

As these areas are the most sensitive to climate change, we feel the need to let researchers working on these records meet and discuss their results and research methods, and maximise their efforts by enlarging their scientific network. The project aims to bring together researchers from the broader fields of paleoceanography because we are convinced that only through an interdisciplinary project we can get an exhaustive and deep understanding of the phenomena we study.

INQUA-MARE was meant to start in 2020, but plans changed due to the COVID-19 emergency. Therefore, three workshops were organised between 2021-2024; each workshop was focused on a specific subject.

Objectives:

  • Compare data obtained by different research groups;
  • Discuss interlaboratory standardisation of data, with a special focus on dating methods;
  • Identify unanalysed existing sedimentary records (cores) or digital data (oceanographic data, seismic data, etc.);
  • Discuss the interpretation of proxies;
  • Investigate what we know about pole-to-pole teleconnections;
  • Discuss whether we have the tools to compare the relevance of the Pacific versus the Atlantic connection on the heat transport between the Poles.

Project leaders:

  • Karen Gariboldi. Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, Università di Pisa, Italy
  • Viviana Maria Gamboa Sojo, Universidad de Costa Rica, San Pedro, Costa Rica
  • Nessim Douss, National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics, Trieste, Italy
