INQUA 2617 sy: Ice Core Young Scientists Workshop (ICYS)

Abstract

The Ice Core Young Scientists (ICYS) network is an international community of early-career researchers (ECRs) working on polar and alpine ice cores and related sciences. Established during the first International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference (2012), ICYS was created to provide an inclusive network for young researchers and encourage long-term international collaborations through hosting seminar series and workshops.

Ahead of the IPICS Open Science Meeting in Banff, Canada, ICYS will host its third international workshop. Morning sessions will explore the future of ice core research from scientific, personal and community-based perspectives to equip ECRs with the confidence and tools to actively shape the field’s direction. The afternoon sessions will focus on “life in science and beyond” and address broader professional development topics. The workshop will combine talks, group discussions and breakout sessions designed to encourage ECR engagement beyond their home institutions. Breakout sessions will focus on topics such as securing project funding, navigating the publication process, effective non-technical communication skills, and planning successful field work. A dedicated breakout session will also be held to explore the role of ice core research in the planning phase of the 5th International Polar Year (IPY5), providing ECRs with an opportunity to contribute to this discussion.

Overall, the workshop aims to strengthen the polar ECR community by facilitating meaningful connections, encouraging collaboration, and providing practical, skills-based guidance to support career development.
