Project 2431 my: INTegrating Ice core, Marine and TErrestrial records for advanced palaeoclimate reconstruction (INTIMATE)

INTIMATE (INTegrating Ice core, Marine and TErrestrial records) is a large, diverse, international community of palaeoclimatologists interested in better understanding abrupt and extreme climate changes.

Abstract

Since INTIMATE was launched at the XIVth INQUA Congress in Berlin in 1995, INTIMATE and INQUA have shared research interests in the field of palaeoclimate and environmental reconstruction. NTIMATE’s fundamental approach is the synchronisation and comparison of high resolution palaeoclimate and environmental records based on their independent timescales. Over time, the group has been focused on understating past abrupt climate changes and transitions and has extended the chronological range from an initial focus on the Last Termination to the current range of approximately 8 to 128,000 years before present.

INTIMATE wants to enlarge the network considering the Holocene and the Southern Hemisphere with the aim to better understand regional climate dynamics beyond the North Atlantic region and their global teleconnections, as well as, to gain a more comprehensive picture of the interactions of climate and environmental changes and environmental on decadal to centennial timescales, which is essential to constrain future climate predictions. Given the current climate emergency, another priority for INTIMATE is to promote impact through research by integrating society-relevant questions into Quaternary research and aligning research outputs with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) priority topics.

INTIMATE has a long trajectory in the training of Quaternary climatologists and aims to keep encouraging and coaching early-career researchers to continue their career progressions for senior leadership positions with especial emphasis on researchers from diverse backgrounds and gender.

Objectives:

• extend the INTIMATE time frame into the Holocene;
• expand the geographical coverage of INTIMATE including the Southern Hemisphere and areas outside of the European-North Atlantic area;
• promote the use of a data framework for INTIMATE-data sharing and visualising;
• foster public engagement;
• encourage, inspire and train ECRs in cutting-edge Quaternary Sciences.
