Methodology Video: Extracting Volcanic Ash (Tephra) from Lake Sediments

The video shows the laboratory procedure typically used to extract microscopic ash particles (tephra) from sedimentary cores. The density extraction separates the tephra from the host sediments which can then be mounted on slides for microscopic work. Peaks in tephra concentrations can indicate the positioning of individual eruption events, providing new insights into the timing and dispersal of ash fall.
