Aims:
1. Develop a strong team working in paleotsunami research by networking (seminars and workshops) and develop a strong collaboration among Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and leading experts in this field.
2. Develop an online data repository for tsunami, storm and other coastal sedimentary deposits and their study involving AI & ML for innovations.
3. Develop meaningful projects to cataloguing tsunamis concerning their source, magnitude reoccurrence intervals and high-resolution tsunami modelling for the coastlines which do not have such records.
Introduction:
Tsunamis are the most devastating natural hazards on earth because of their high energy, less response time, unpredictable nature and the capability to cause mass distractions across the globe. The socio-economic and environmental collapse caused by the tsunami is sometimes irreversible! 2011 Tohoku earthquake associated tsunami and Fukushima reactor failure is an example of that. 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and its death toll of ~1.8 lakh people are an unforgettable memory. Recent research suggests many more such past events occurred across the globe. However, the information on such tsunamis (source, magnitude and recurrence-intervals etc.) is incomplete for many areas on mother earth. High-resolution tsunami modelling based on this information is also not done for many coastlines. Therefore, addressing this question is having international importance in character.
To eliminate shortcomings in our understanding of tsunamis, we need to change our perspective by employing advanced technologies on a global scale. For that, we need to find all data sets across the globe and classify them in a user-friendly manner for technological integration. This multi-year project is the first step towards that aim; therefore, we develop networking among early career researchers (ECR) and experts working in the tsunami, collaborate with experts, data collection, and scientific exchange. Long term goal of the project is to develop various projects internationally. Therefore, our project will be a geological, archaeological and historical blend with technological support to solve the tsunami problem. Hence this project enhances our knowledge of tsunamis and creates awareness of their impacts among people.
Anticipated Outputs:
The first outcome of this project is team creation & networking among ECR and experts focused on tsunami research. Secondly, this project develops an online platform helpful for scientific communities and engineers to visualize tsunami hazards. Finally, this networking develops various meaningful projects at the international level, which help tsunami hazard assessment for highly populated coastlines of our mother earth. It also boosts initiatives of the government and private firms working on disaster-resilient infrastructure development across the globe.
